RNG BOOKLAT-AKLAT-MULAT PROJECT
"Education makes a people easy to lead, but difficult to drive; easy to govern but impossible to enslave." - Baron Henry Peter Brougham
During the last quarter of year 2008, 24th of October when Radyo Natin Guimba (RNG), a community radio station in Guimba, Nueva Ecija under the supervision of the Community Visions and Initiatives Incorporated (COMVIS), a non-stock non profit local Non-Government Organization with the objective to provide quality education to school children and youth through its primary and secondary schools within area of jurisdiction, in collaboration with the Children International Philippines Housing Foundation Inc. (CI-PHFI) launched its first ever joint project that is “BOOKLAT-AKLAT-MULAT” barangay-school library as part of RNG: Operation Damayan, RNG’s flagship public service program.
Two public elementary schools specifically Macatcatuit Elementary School and Yuson Elementary School were at first identified as pilot school in conduct of such activities in their respective barangays in Guimba.
This project made a child-friendly haven that promotes interest in reading as a habit among students and youth of the community as a whole. Encourage them to uphold the importance of reading in making inquiries in nation-building, increase public awareness and finally, to fully develop this project as a resource learning center for these kids.
Before and After
You can’t teach a child to play the piano without a piano. A child can’t learn to read without books or other printed materials. Access to books is the key to literacy, yet the majority of children in low-income families exist in a wordless environment, without books in their homes or in the preschool and after-school programs they attend. The low-income neighborhoods in which they live often lack libraries, bookstores or even signs with interesting written messages.
Before, around four months ago, each of our pilot area initially acquire with more than 300 assorted books last year, not enough to fill up the need to educate children for the 64 barangays in Guimba whereas majority was in the poverty level. Now, through the effort of Radyo Natin Guimba in collaboration to Children International, there were more than 14, 000 good quality hardbound used books in Science, Math, English and General References with according to CI-PHFI estimated value of $12,000 for elementary and high schools under the schools Division of Nueva Ecija, District of Guimba.
Morning of March 5, 2009 a 40 footer container van having 20 pallets of books arrived in Guimba and opened only with the presence of CI-PHFI representative “Ding” who assisted in unloading and sorting of books for three to five days with the help of the RNG staff and others around twenty-five (25) volunteers came from Barangay Sta. Veronica and Sto. Cristo, Guimba.
And for its safety, books were situated in a wide-space area of RNG’s staff house waiting for distribution.
Earlier, interested schools and charitable institution heads was invited to attend a meeting with regards to this forthcoming event and most of them established a good reaction and agreed to shoulder the transport cost from the port to the site and the provision of logistics in the unloading, sorting and distribution of books so they do sent letter of request indicating the target public school beneficiaries, public and community libraries and reasons why they need the books and contact details. In addition, the recipient schools and respective organizations has been informed upon its approval and advised to ensure all the requirements agreed between the benefactor and the beneficiary.
Through the District Supervisors, Dr. Romeo S. Ramones of Guimba East District and Mr. John A. Dela Cruz of Guimba West District Division of Nueva Ecija, twenty-four (24) public elementary schools were identified as beneficiaries (See the following table), plus four (4) high schools and two (2) other institutions.
The following table shows identified schools chosen as beneficiaries with their corresponding number of books and workbooks received:
